Kenneth Phelan attended Our Lady of Hope Grammar School, Middle Village‚ and graduated from Grover Cleveland High School‚ Ridgewood. He also attended St. John’s University, Jamaica‚ New York‚ and St. Francis College, Brooklyn‚ New York.
Kenny was a lifetime member of the Maspeth community. He was born, raised and was raising his children here.
As a youth, Kenny was a newspaper delivery boy for six years. He played baseball, basketball and football. During high school he was on the Grover Cleveland swim team. He worked at Community Beverage during his high school and college years.
He was an avid Mets and Rangers fan. Loved to go to the games. Loved the ocean especially at Breezy Point. He was an expert skier and loved the slopes at Killington.
Kenny was active in Our Lady of Hope for many years coaching boys and girls CYO basketball intermittently since he was 18 years old. This included coaching his younger brother‚ Lenny‚ his own children and many other youths of the parish.
On July 13, 1981‚ he was appointed to the NYPD. He transferred to the FDNY on November 12‚ 1989. He was a fireman in Eng. 16 and Ladder 7 in Manhattan until his promotion to Lieutenant on May 11‚ 2000. He was currently at Eng. 217 in Bedford-Stuyvesant‚ Brooklyn‚ which was his father’s company.
Kenny will be deeply missed by his family, friends‚ and the community.
